Journal of a voyage on the clipper ship Hornet and related correspondence, 1866-1901.

Holograph journal (ca. 300 pages) written in a printed pocket diary for the year 1866, of Henry Ferguson's experiences with his brother Samuel as passengers on the clipper-ship Hornet sailing from New York on Jan 15 1866, to San Francisco; the onboard fire and subsequent sinking of the ship in the Pacific on May 4; sailing in a long boat on open water for 4,000 miles until reaching Hawaii on June 15; and their departure for California on July 19 and arrival on August 13. The entries describe the captain of the Hornet, Josiah A. Mitchell, and crew, their location, activities, food, and physical condition, and the assistance given them by natives and whites on Hawaii. Entries are sporadic after Jul 10, and the pages for Oct 18-Dec 18 have been removed. The diary also contains miscellaneous notes, drawings, and accounts of personal items purchased, lists of Hawaiian words, and arithmetic calculations. A signed, undated holograph map of the Hawaiian Islands showing their course in the long boat is laid in. The diary is accompanied by one ALS copy, dated 1866 Jun 18, Lahapahoehoe, from Henry Ferguson to his father describing the voyages; four ALS dated 1899 Nov 20-1900 Mar 14, from Samuel Clemens to Henry Ferguson regarding the publication of Henry and Samuel Ferguson's diary accounts of their experience, with three AL draft replies from Ferguson to Clemens; one TLS and three ALS dated 1900 Mar 6-10, from Harper & Brothers regarding Clemens's publication of the diaries, and holograph notes summarizing Ferguson's response to the publisher written on the verso of a Harper & Brothers envelope. In addition, there are two TLS and six ALS to Ferguson from individuals concerning the incident, its survivors, and other publications of the story.
